3-Week Advanced Casino Series

Homework for last workshop

Individually or as a couple, find a casino dancing video that you like. In the video, find a combination or something that is novel to you, and learn both the follower and the leader steps in order to teach it to the rest of the class. The length of what you teach can be up to four counts of 8. Here are some suggestions of videos to watch, which are by no means exhaustive:

Hello, and thank you for your interest in this workshop series! Also, welcome to the blog if it’s your first time here. Below you will find all the information you need for the workshop, how to register, and a small Q&A that I hope answers any burning questions you may have.

Brief Description of Workshops

This 3-workshop series explores the foundations and technical complexities of casino dancing, as well as the intersections of dance and music (musicality). You will learn what makes the dance intrinsically casino, core leading and following techniques along with applications, and how to put it all together when we are dancing to the music.

Registered leads: Mei, Evan, Gerardo, Alex, Alan, Rahjan, Elijah

Registered follows: Tamera, Leensa, Martina, Chloe, Nicole, Paula

Address and parking

The workshops will take place at the Johnson Center of George Mason University.

You can park for free in Lot K.

Once you are in the Johnson Center, go to the ground floor. Look for the Starbucks and head toward the entrance doors. It’s on the hallway next to the WGMU station. There is a sign for a Dance Studio as well. If you enter through the ground floor, it will be immediately to your right (you will see the radio station)

Registration and payment

Space is limited! Smaller classes allow the instructor to focus more on the students. Likewise, smaller class sizes allow the students to interact more closely with the instructor and thus gain more from the experience. Therefore, there will be only 14 spots open: 7 leaders and 7 followers.

Q&A

Q: What does “advanced” mean in the context of this workshop series?

“Advanced” means that you will learn advanced concepts as we delve deep into technique and foundations. That said, this series assumes that you know how to dance casino. If you are just exploring the dance, this is likely not a workshop for you.

Q: If, for example, someone identifies as a woman, can they register as a lead, and viceversa?

A: Of course! Leading and following does not know gender. In fact, most advanced dancers can switch between both roles.

Q: Can I just pay and attend one individual workshop instead of attending all three?

A: Regrettably no. These workshops are progressive in nature. This means that one class feeds off the other. Someone who comes, for example, for the third workshop only will be mostly lost. It is also a logistical issue: having different numbers of attendees each workshop can mean that people won’t always have a partner with which to practice.

Q: If I already paid for the workshops and decide not to come, will I get a refund?

A: All sales are final. Because spots are limited, this means that some people who wanted to attend did not because there was no space. Please check your calendar closely to ensure that you can attend during all three dates.
